CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou boys and girls captured the Aroostook League Championships Saturday in a meet hosted by the Vikings.
The Caribou boys easily took home first place with a team score of 17 points, followed by Washburn with 50 and Presque Isle with 61. The Viking girls had a tougher challenge as they held off a surging Houlton squad. The Caribou girls finished with 36 points, followed by Houlton with 43 and Presque Isle with 49.
For Caribou, the girls team went undefeated in the Aroostook League this year.
“The girls had their best performance at the Aroostook County Championships on Saturday,” Viking coach Thomas Beckum said. “The girls are currently ranked fourth in the PVC. I am extremely proud as today we took a step forward to qualifying for the state meet.”
Saturday’s meet served as a state qualifier for the Class C schools, with the Houlton girls earning a spot in the state championships. Washburn captured the boys team qualifier for Class C. Two individual Shire boys and two Fort Kent girls also qualified for the state meet in Class C.
For Caribou and Presque Isle, the state qualifier will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, in the Penobscot Valley Conference championship meet in Bangor.
The state championships were originally slated to be held in the traditional location of Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, but according to Caribou Athletic Director Evan Graves, that site is being reconsidered due to COVID-19 concerns in Belfast.
For Houlton, the best finish on the day came from Daniel Ross who came in second place overall with a 17:30, a new personal record.
“Every one of the girls ran new personal bests as they were trying to upset Caribou for the county championship, but came up just shy due to some Caribou runners having equivalent breakout performances,” Houlton coach Chris Rines said. “We also for the first time this year ended up with a third team (Presque Isle) scoring in the meet and they added extra displacement points to us that we just couldn’t recover from.
