75 Years Ago – Nov. 22, 1945
Prowess in the potato field — If there is any question of the value of the annual potato harvest recess to give children a chance to help with the crop, figures to be released by George S. Cummings for the Houlton schools to silence critics once and for all. Youngsters again demonstrated their value at harvest time, earning $30,043.76 at all kinds of jobs. Houlton school pupils picked 145,803 barrels. Ninth-graders were tops for all classes.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1970
Children’s Theater players — Cast and crew of Houlton’s Children’s Theater are busy at work in rehearsal for “Snow White,” this year’s first theater production, scheduled for showing at the Gentile Memorial Building December 12 and 13. Under the direction of Gordon Cantiello, drama teacher at Ricker College.
Fraternity members decorate — Members of Kappa Beta Chapter of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity of Ricker College were out early Sunday morning to install Christmas lanterns on lamp posts throughout the business district. Twenty two lanterns were put up, and will be turned on this Saturday when Houlton officially welcomes the Christmas season. Helping were Dave Hastings and fraternity brothers Lance Trevallia, Jeff Wennar and Eddie Gentile.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 22, 1995
Fitness center opens — Guiod’s Fitness Center, located on Maine Street in Houlton, recently had a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Attending the event was the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nancy Ketch, Wanda Desrosiers of the Retail Trade Board (part of the chamber), Tim Guiod, Brittany Guiod and Debra Giuod. Also present was Houlton Town Manager Allen Bean and Bob Reese, President of the Chamber Board.
Walmart to donate a percentage of store sales back to Houlton — Walmart will turn the flurry of holiday spending into an early present for the Town of Houlton by donating a percentage of store sales between 7am and noon on Saturday, Nov. 25. This marks the fifth year Walmart will donate a percentage of holiday sales to local charities.
