115 Years Ago – Nov.  15, 1905

Two million bushels of potatoes – –  During the month of November 1905, there were 716,571 bushels of potatoes shipped on the B & A Railroad. This makes the total crop, including November’s, 2,358,098 bushels.

100 Years Ago – Dec. 9, 1920

Hummingbird on display — Olof O. Nylander has placed on exhibit at the Caribou Public Library a beautiful large specimen of a hummingbird or hawk moth, which was captured at Colby Siding Sept. 11, 1919. It is probably the only specimen ever found in Maine.

75 Years Ago – Dec. 6, 1945

Salvation Army drive — The Salvation Army Rose Day this Saturday will wind up the Salvation Army Drive in Caribou. Mr. R.D. Groff of Caribou the director, said.

Local veteran opens skating rink — Outdoor sports lovers will welcome the announcement of the opening Sunday of Glacier Rink by its proprietor, Michael Wakem, a recently discharged war veteran. The new rink is located on Bridge Street near the church.

50 Years Ago – Dec. 9, 1970

Caribou High Band Invited to Cherry Blossom Festival — The Caribou High School band has been selected to represent the state of Maine at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., during the month of April 1971. The choice of the local band was made by a selection committee at state level.

Girl Scout Pennyland J.C. Penney Co. of Caribou is the only store in Aroostook County where a complete line of Girl Scout uniforms and accessories are available. At the grand opening of the new department were Betty Kirkpatrick, Catherine Brewer and Dorris Hafford. 

25 Years Ago – Dec. 6, 1995

Prize winner Nancy Corbin of Caribou was the winner of two bicycles offered in a fundraising effort to benefit the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Departments, Christmas Toy Project for the area’s needy children. Bud Skidgel, the fire department’s co-chair for the event, presented Corbin the award Saturday, Dec. 2.

Cozy Corner Collectibles QVC, the nation’s largest home shopping network, aired a locally made product for the second time on Tuesday, Nov. 28. Gene and Linda Senechal, owners of Cozy Corner Collectibles in Fort Fairfield, said their product, a Village Candle and a Pressed Tin Shade, again had a sellout of 2,000. QVC has committed another large order in January to be shipped in time for Valentine’s Day.
