Christmas comes early for East Grand students

DANFORTH, Maine — The holiday break is coming a bit early for students at East Grand Community School.

Principal/Superintendent Peggy White said Tuesday that the RSU 84 School Board decided to move up its Christmas vacation as a precautionary measure, given the rise of COVID-19 cases in the greater southern Aroostook County region.

Students were originally scheduled to attend class until Tuesday, Dec. 22, before enjoying the holiday break. The final day of class will now be Friday, Dec. 18. Students will resume classes on Monday, Jan. 4.

“We closed for a two-day deep clean at the beginning of December, but other than that we have been in school,” White said. “We feel very fortunate to have made it all the way to Christmas vacation with only a two-day shutdown.”

The district does not plan to make up the two lost days as the Maine Department of Education Commissioner waived the mandatory 175 days of education requirement again this school year, according to White.
