100 Years Ago – Dec. 30, 1920
Another ‘Old Folks Dance’ coming up — Those who attended the “Old Folks” dance at Weston Hall last month are reminded that the next one in the series will be held at Weston Hall Thursday night, Dec. 30, and dancing will commence at 8 o’clock sharp with those who are prompt, so in order to enjoy the evening it will be necessary to be there on time.
Paving — There is considerable agitation about the town to proceed with the project to completely pave Market Square at the earliest possible time.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 27, 1945
New firm name for auto dealer — Berry & Ben becomes The Ralph Berry Co. starting January 1. The firm was started 35 years ago. It is the oldest retail auto dealer in Aroostook County.
Fire damages building — An early morning fire, which gained considerable headway before it was discovered, exceeded $85,000 in damage to the Brick Green Block occupied by J.C. Penney.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 30, 1970
Winners drawn — The First National Bank of Aroostook in Houlton held the drawing for Christmas Club prizes. First prize of $100 went to Charles L. Murphy of Houlton. Mr. James Pierce presented the prizes, where he is chairman of the board for the bank.
New hospital — A major step toward the eventual construction of a new hospital in Houlton was realized with the appointment of a 16-member Board of Trustees of Southern Aroostook’s new merged hospital.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 27, 1995
Math champs — The Houlton Southside School sixth-grade math team brought home team and individual honors during the Northern Maine Math League Competition. Overall, the team placed first in The County. The team is coached by Barbara Burton.
Helping others — Students at the Houlton Southside School held a food drive for the Salvation Army. Lt. Barbara Chamberlin accepted the donation on behalf of the Salvation Army.
