HOULTON, Maine — A new spelling champ was crowned at Greater Houlton Christian Academy as seventh-grader Stephanie Tuttle bested five of her peers to win the title.
Tuttle, who was runner-up in last year’s competition, successfully spelled the word “outlandish” to claim her school’s championship. Colton Simoes finished as the runner-up.
Traditionally, an Aroostook County spelling bee is held at the University of Maine at Fort Kent for all local bee winners. It remains to be determined whether such an event will be held this year, or if some form of a virtual competition will need to be held due to COVID-19.
Pastor Randall Burns of the Military Street Baptist Church once again served as the moderator for the spelling competition.
Other spellers in the GHCA bee were Malachi Witmer, Waylon Davis, Cole Watson and Addison Watson.
