New deputy — Miss Bessie Pierce of Mars Hill has been appointed by Sheriff Edmund Grant to deputy sheriff for Aroostook County. This is the first time in the state of Maine that a woman was nominated for the position.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 24, 1946
Veterans Service Center opening in Caribou — The Caribou Town Council and other municipal officials expect to open a Veterans Service Center in Caribou early in February, where all veterans of Caribou can find answers to their problems and the help they need.
Lively Scout meeting held in Caribou — The Central District of the Katahdin Area Council of Boy Scouts of America held its January meeting at the Vaughn House in Caribou last Monday. In spite of the extremely cold weather and drifting snow, 30 Scouts were present from all over the district.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 27, 1971
Restaurant closes — The Golden Dragon Restaurant in Caribou closed its doors for good on Sunday, Jan. 25.
Shopping mall — One of the topics to be covered at the Caribou City Council’s meeting next week will be whether to put a roof over the city shopping mall. Council members plan to discuss the project’s feasibility.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 24, 1996
Local firm awarded Job Corps project — The Caribou firm of CIP Associates was awarded a $6.3 million contract Thursday for the renovation of 10 Job Corps Center buildings and the construction of an additional building at the Loring Commerce Centre.
Forecasting through the internet — Robert Lightbown of Caribou, long interested in forecasting, has been predicting the weather on the internet since October 1995. He accesses weather data via his computer, as well as observations he makes in his own backyard, and puts them on a World Wide Web page available on computers around the world.
