100 Years Ago – Feb. 10, 1921
Houlton Trust Co. purchased Masur Block — At a special meeting of the stockholders of the Houlton Trust Co. held on Friday, it was voted to purchase the property on the corner of Market Square, known as the Masur Block. The property will be transferred to its new owners this week.
Elks minstrel — The Minstrel Show which was put on by the Houlton Lodge of Elks was the finest performance ever given in Houlton. The show was put on under the direction of J. Dal Luther, a past master in the theatrical line.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 7, 1946
J.C. Penney will reopen Feb. 13t — The J.C. Penney store, which has been absent from Houlton since a fire destroyed the building, has plans to reopen in new temporary headquarters Feb. 13.
Lions Club show pleases audience — Standing room only was again the tribute given by the general public to the sixth annual Musical Revue presented at the Temple Theater in Houlton by the Houlton Lions Club. The performance generated much applause and laughter from all who attended.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 10, 1971
Visit nursing home — Seventh- and eighth-grade girls of Brockton Elementary School have been visiting the Russell Nursing Home in Danforth one day a week since last fall. The girls bring cake, cookies and read to the residents in an attempt to break up the monotony of their nursing home lives.
Recreation Department honors Gibson — J. Irvine Gibson was honored recently at a party given at the Gentile Memorial Building by the Recreation Department personnel. Mr. Gibson retired on Dec. 31 after being the custodian for the Parks and Recreation Department for 15 years. He was presented with a gift and more than fifty guests gathered to express their appreciation.
