CARIBOU, Maine — The city of Caribou posted a livestream of the Feb. 16 storm, attracting viewers from Maine and beyond, with those from away reminiscing about their time growing up in northern Maine.
The webcam was down this summer, according to city events coordinator Christina Kane-Gibson, but it was recently fixed and the streams are back online.
She said the city has had a live webcam facing the city’s downtown area for about a couple years. The camera is up and running throughout the year, but Kane-Gibson said storms are when the feed gets the most views.
The National Weather Service in Caribou predicted approximately nine inches for the Feb. 16 storm.
“We have a lot of people from away that just like to see the snow,” she said. “Sometimes a thread will open up and people might say they’re watching from another state like Florida.”
She said the camera started as an opportunity to let others see the downtown Caribou area. Kane-Gibson, a Caribou native who moved out of state before coming back to her hometown, said it’s something she would have loved to see when she was away.
“I would’ve loved to click on this and be able to feel like I was home,” she said. “And you know how the storms up here are. Everybody from here remembers what Aroostook County storms were like.”
