MARS HILL, Maine — In a 53-to-31 finish, the No. 3 Central Aroostook (7-6 overall) girls rolled to a victory on Wednesday night against No. 6 Fort Kent (2-6) in an Aroostook County League Class B/C quarterfinal.
“I thought we played extremely well as a unit,” Central Aroostook girls basketball coach Dillon Kingsbury said after the game. “We have talented individuals but I thought that was the first time each of us played our role perfectly. It’s good to see moving through the playoffs.”
Central Aroostook’s Kira Fitzherbert led the night with a game high of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Maci Beals also had a strong game contributing 17 points, while Libby Grass added 10, Rylee Pierce had six, and Mallory Kingsbury had two.
Fort Kent sophomore Caitlin Overlock led the team with eight points, while Hannah Lovely added seven; Larissa Daigle and Julia Cyr, both had five; Shaylee Jandreau, four; and Kassidy O’Leary, two.
Easily holding the lead at the half at 29-to-16, the Central Aroostook girls kept that pace through the third quarter. But Fort Kent girls heightened the challenge in the fourth quarter, picking up nine points against Central Aroostook’s 11 points.
Wednesday’s Class B/C game was the first round of the Aroostook County League playoffs for the girls. And with this win, Central Aroostook heads to the semifinals in Houlton Friday (time to be determined).
“Houlton is a good team who’s extremely well coached, Shawn Graham does a great job down there, “Kingsbury said. “ We’re just going to try to make some shots and see if we can give them a game.”
