100 Years Ago – March 24, 1921
Setting up new location — E.A. Gillen & Co. will move their grocery store and meat business this week to the Lane & Pearce Store on Market Square and expect to be open and ready for business Saturday.
Church organ improvements — A representative of Estey Organ Co. will arrive in town next week and install an electric blower in connection with the Fogg Memorial Organ at the Congregational Church.
75 Years Ago – March 20, 1946
Big Brother/Big Sister — Twenty six children, ranging in age from 7 to 14, are taking part in the Big Brother/Big Sister program sponsored by the Newman Club at Ricker College and the Houlton Clinic of the Aroostook Mental Health Center.
Town meeting — In a town meeting lasting just under two hours and attended by less than 200 Houlton citizens, the group acted on fewer articles then have appeared in a town warrant in many years. A budget of more than $300,000 was voted on to carry on the town’s business for the ensuing year.
50 Years Ago – March 24, 1971
London Motors gives filmstrips to high schools — Driver education filmstrips incorporating the latest visual aid techniques were donated this week to Houlton High School and to East Grand High School in Danforth by Motors of Houlton.
Easter egg hunt to be April 10 — With the melting of snow in the Northeast, the minds of many young children are turning to thoughts of the Easter Bunny, and once again the Houlton Chamber of Commerce is going to aid the Holiday Hare by sponsoring its third annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter Bunny will be hiding his eggs in secret locations on Saturday, April 10.
25 Years Ago -March 20, 1996
Job shadows — SAD#29’s seventh grade team has been working on an interdisciplinary career unit. Individual students have contacted employers in the area and with the assistance of parents they have been able to “job shadow” places of business. Students have been working closely with teacher Mrs. Sussman.
Mother Hubbard opens — The proprietor of a new business, Mother Hubbard, Michelle Chase cut the ribbon for the opening Tuesday. Attending the opening were Houlton Chamber of Commerce Director Nancy Ketch, Houlton Town Manager Allen Bean and Chase’s son Jeremiah and his son Jacob. Chamber President Bob Reese said the grand opening will be March 29 and 30.
