PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Wintergreen Arts Center is featuring local artist W. H. Reed III in May. The Opening Reception of his show will be held May 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., during Presque Isle’s First Friday Art Walk.
Winston is a self-taught artist with serious intentions. By the age of twenty-three he started fluid line drawings and experimenting in acrylic on canvas. Over the past six years Winston moved into oil sticks and oil paint on canvas and paper. Oil remains his most reached-for medium of expression.
With a compulsion to lay down his thoughts in expressive lines Winston changes his size and medium of work out of practical necessity. Winston noted the six-by-eight-inch oil pastels—to be shown in May—are an example of a time when he had no access to his studio.
Raised in a small town in Connecticut, Winston explored the many museums, concert halls, and playhouses available. He is a passionate writer of poetry and a collector of a broad selection of music, but he reminds us that he sees his painting as a more complete form of his expression.
When asked to speak of his work Winston simply responds, “they are my dreams, my nightmares, my observations.”
After many years working as a first responder in the inner city, and nine years as a submariner, Winston now lives and works here in the County. Winston currently works as a Firefighter/Paramedic for the Presque Isle Fire Department and resides in Presque Isle with his wife Andrea and their two young daughters.
