HOULTON, Maine — Houlton and Presque Isle played in a closely contested May 4 match until the Shires’ bats came alive late in the game to decisively defeat the Wildcats, 13-1.
Scoring for Houlton was led by Victoria Forbush, who went two for three at the plate with three runs batted in, and also scored two runs. Drew Warman, Bre Barton and Olivia Henderson also contributed runs batted in, with all of Houlton’s bottom five in the lineup scoring at least one run.
Houlton limited Presque Isle’s run scoring thanks to the pitching of Maddie Marino, who had four strikeouts and limited her opponents to one run. The game remained scoreless until the second inning, with a run scored by Houlton’s Emma Swallow. Marino scored another run in the third, before Presque Isle responded with a run in the fourth scored by Kiley Howlett to make it 2-1.
But in the bottom of the fourth inning Houlton broke the game open, scoring five runs in the fourth and an additional six runs in the fifth inning. Forbush, Barton, Henderson, along with Amelia Callnan and Calli Sylvia all scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings.
With the win, Houlton’s record moves to 2-0 on the season, while Presque Isle’s record is now 0-3.
