HOULTON, Maine — A section of roof over the building of the Katahdin Trust building in Houlton collapsed Friday morning after an impact from a large vehicle.
The incident occurred sometime around 5 a.m, when a large vehicle in the building’s parking lot came into contact with the section of roof over the ATM drive-thru section, according to Krista Putnam, the bank’s senior vice president of marketing.
“We were made aware of the incident at around 6 a.m.,” Putnam said. “There was no damage done to the ATM, only to the roofing.” Putnam declined to say what type of vehicle it was that caused the damage.
Andrew Mooers, owner of Mooers Realty located next door to Katahdin Trust, said he heard the incident occur around 5 a.m. He described the noise as a “thunk” sounding similar to a snowplow dropping its blade on the ground. This was followed by a vehicle driving away extremely fast and loud.
“Someone at the Katahdin Trust Houlton branch drive-thru next door must have made a very early withdrawal and took a piece of the ATM overhang with them,” Mooers wrote on social media following the incident. “But no bank alarm sounding, going off like in the movies you and I have watched.”
The drive-thru ATM was placed out of service while the roof was repaired Friday morning, but the system is expected to resume quickly once the repairs have been made.
The operator of the vehicle remains unidentified. It is unknown whether the incident was intentional or an accident. Police are investigating to gain further information about the collapse.
The bank has security cameras placed around the ATM machine that can observe drivers who come through the drive-thru.
