It has been a busy time on the baseball and softball diamonds for high school squads. Coaches are asked to submit their results, including highlights and stats, after each game via email to jcyr@bangordailynews.com for inclusion in the newspaper.
Baseball
Katahdin 29, East Grand 0 — At Danforth May 3, the Cougars blasted 23 hits enroute to the big win over the Vikings of East Grand. Eighth-grader Connor Edwards led the way with five hits for Katahdin. Senior Wesley Richardson tallied four hits, while sophomores Jeffery Martin (home run) and Kalan Mann both had three hits.
Martin, Grady Ritchie and Richardson combined for the shutout, allowing two hits and two walks, with 10 strikeouts.
For East Grand, Jordan Mayhew and Conner Fogg both had one hit. Isaac Crone and Tyler Frye shared mound duties, combining to allow 29 runs on 23 hits and eight walks, with two strikeouts.
“We are a very young team as we head into the season,” Katahdin coach Tim Thoreson said. “We have only four players on our roster with varsity baseball experience. We were very fortunate with the weather this year to be outside and on our field a week before April vacation. Normally, we are stepping on a baseball field for the first time when we play our first game.”
Thoreson added his goal is to “focus on using the four years we have with each player to help develop them into excellent young men when they graduate.”
Southern Aroostook 10, Fort Fairfield 0 — At Fort Fairfield May 4, Garrett Harvey and Nolan Hodgkins combined to pitch a no-hitter. Harvey got the win, pitching three innings with 7 strikeouts. Harvey also went 2-3 at the plate, with 2 RBIs. Xavier Morales had two hits with a run scored, and Nolan Hodgkins had two hits.
Hodgdon 3, Central Aroostook 2 — At Hodgdon May 4, Austin Winslow earned the win on the mound pitching six innings, striking out nine. He helped his own cause by hitting a single and scoring a run. Oisin Gardiner added a single, a double, and a run scored for the Hawks.
For Central Aroostook, Josh Thomas pitched a strong complete game and added a single, double, and run scored for the Panthers.
Katahdin 18, Ashland 0 — At Stacyville May 6, the Cougars rolled to a big victory over Ashland. Katahdin scored 11 times in the first inning and never looked back.
Jeff Martin had four hits and drove in three runs to lead the Cougars offensively. Justin Hurlbert and Ahmik Bechard each had three hits, and Wesley Richardson, Kalan Mann and Kyle McNally each had two hits.
Jeff Martin, Josh Martin and Grady Ritchie combined for the no-hitter, striking out 12 Ashland batters.
Softball
Katahdin 32, East Grand 2 — At Stacyville May 3, Katahdin’s Jayden Stevens pitched the win, scattering two runs on one hit and four walks, with 10 strikeouts.
Stevens helped her cause at the plate with two doubles and two singles. Hunter Hartsgrove added three singles. Emma McNally, Staci Lea Anderson and McKenzie Landry each had a triple for the Cougars.
For East Grand, Emma Griffiths tallied the lone hit with a single.
Southern Aroostook 5, Washburn 4 — In the first game of a 5-inning doubleheader Saturday, May 1 at Dyer Brook, Jayniece Wenzloff picked up the win inside the pitching circle for SA. Wenzloff also helped her cause with a home run in the second inning to give the Warriors a lead they did not relinquish.
Maddie Russell added a double and single and earned the save in the circle.
Southern Aroostook 9, Washburn 1 — In the second game of the doubleheader, Russell pitched four innings of one-run ball and helped herself at the plate with a triple, single, walk and three runs scored as the Warriors were victorious. Cami Shields also tripled and scored two runs.
