New church in progress — Work has commenced on the building of the new First Baptist Church.
Boarding house – – E.E. Haynes is erecting a boarding house near the dam to accommodate a crew of fifty men who are expected to arrive Monday to resume work on the extension of the sewer system in Caribou.
100 Years Ago – May 12, 1921
Taxi service — Tony Disy started his daily taxi service between Caribou and Presque Isle on May 9.
Newspapers coming by cars — Starting next Sunday, May 15, towns North of Bangor, as far as Houlton will receive their newspapers by the way of automobiles.
75 Years Ago – May 8, 1946
Farm Work — The newspaper reported that Caribou High School and other County schools are going to school on a one session basis to permit the youth to assist in preparing the ground and cutting seed.
Dedicated employee — Eddie Dumond of the Caribou Waterworks Corporation claims that he hasn’t missed a fire in Caribou for the past five years. He is always on the job to see that all hydrants are in proper working order and proudly boasts that every drop of water used has gone through the filter house.
50 Years Ago – May 12, 1971
New building will house four firms — An attractively designed new 14,000-square-foot structure in Caribou has as prospective tenants Aron C. Brown, Inc., Caribou Industrial Heating and Piping, Caribou TV, and Maine Public Service Company.
4-H Clubs participate in cleanup — Four local 4-H Clubs, the ABC Workers, Black Cats and White Kittens, the HalfWay Club and the Aroostook Valley Dairy, are currently engaged in a litter pickup in the area. 4-H Clubs have determined to work all day in the community towards the development and beautification goal.
25 Years Ago – May 8, 1996
Mendonca to compete in Ironman Event — Mike Mendonca, fitness coordinator for the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department, had his name drawn from a lottery to compete in the 1996 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Mendonca was one of 150 names selected out of 2,000 applicants.
Ouellette named Cary’s Nurse of the Year — Sue Ouellette of New Sweden, a registered nurse and certified critical care nurse at Cary Medical Center, has been named Cary’s Nurse of the Year. She was selected by her peers and was presented with special recognition Monday, during Cary’s official kickoff to National Nurses Week, May 5 – 12.
