CARIBOU, Maine — Track and field athletes from across Aroostook County gathered at Caribou High School Friday afternoon for the Aroostook League championships.
While heavy downpours were noted in southern and central Aroostook, the rains held off at Caribou High School to allow County athletes an opportunity to shine in the final meet of the regular season.
The Caribou boys team ran away with the top honors, easily outdistancing the competition. Not to be outdone, the cooperative team between Houlton and Greater Houlton Christian Academy came away with top honors for the first time in the program’s modern history.
“Friday night will surely be a night to remember for us as the girls team put up a 200-point effort to not only break the team scoring record, but also walk away with the Aroostook County League team championship,” coach Chris Rines said.
“I cannot say to any certainty if this is indeed the first championship win for the girls team in school history, but it certainly is the first one during my tenure as coach, and I know for a fact it is the first time a team other than Caribou has won the title since at least 2003 — probably even longer than that,” Rines added.
The overall girls team scores were: 1, Houlton/GHCA, 200; 2, Presque Isle, 154; 3, Caribou, 58; 4, Maine School of Science and Math, 49; and 5 (tie), Fort Kent and Fort Fairfield, both 46.
Presque Isle’s Annalise Jandreau was the top girls performer as she accumulated 38 points on the day.
Of the top 10 scorers in the girls meet, six of them were Shiretowners. The team was led by Emma Ardell and Samantha Johnson, who finished second (34 points) and third (32 points) respectively.
Rounding out the top 10 were: 4, Annika Reynolds, FF, 26; 4, Lindsey Himes, PI, 26; 6, Elena Ardell, Hou/GHCA, 25.50; 7, Ariana Ardell, Hou/GHCA, 24.50; 8, Emmalyne Drake, Hou/GHCA, 23; and 9 (tie) Eva Callioras, FF; Edie Shea, Car; and Kaitlyn Kenney, Hou/GCHA, each with 20 points.
