Agency on Aging offers online classes, events in June

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Agency on Aging will offer a number of online and in-person classes in June to help older persons and their care partners succeed and thrive in their own homes. 

Pre-registration is required for all classes. 

Offerings include the following.

Savvy Caregiver: online class, 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Delivered in two-hour sessions, the class includes a manual and workbook. It aims to introduce family caregivers to the caregiving role, providing them with knowledge to carry out that role.

Medicare 101: online class, Tuesday, June 8, 10-11:30 a.m. The class will cover saving money on Medicare, coverage options and supplements. Tara Henderson, Medicare education coordinator, will instruct.

Falls Prevention Informational Session: free online class, Wednesday, June 9, 10-11 a.m. Preregistration is required. Participants will receive link after registration. Topics include an overview of falls prevention and other health classes available in Aroostook County.

Senior Medicare Patrol Fraud and Abuse: online class, Wednesday, June 9, 10-11:30 a.m. Covers ways to protect against Medicare fraud and scams. 

Brain Builders – You Can Make a Difference: online class, Tuesday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 22, 11 a.m.-noon. The class will help participants create goals that impact their life and boost their brain health.Topics include keeping the brain healthy to improve mood and decrease likelihood of illnesses that threaten quality of life.

Bingocize: online class, 10-11 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 and July 1. This health promotion program mixes bingo with moderate exercise. Participants will perform fall prevention exercises while learning about the importance of  physical fitness in preventing serious falls. Free; for individuals over 55.

Conversations Project: online class, 11 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, June 16, and Wednesday, June 23. This class can assist people in developing questions or sharing their concerns with loved ones and the family doctor. 

MaineCare Toolkit: online class, 9-10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 17, and Thursday, June 24. The program is designed to help older persons in northern Maine identify and apply for financial assistance for nursing home care or in-home support services. 

The agency and Healthy Living for Me will offer other upcoming events, include the in-person class Tai Chi for Better Health and Balance, Living Well with Chronic Pain and Living Well with Diabetes. Those interested should call the agency for information on the next session.
