100 Years Ago – June 8, 1921
New auto inspector — Maurice Elliot has been appointed Automobile Inspector for this part of the state. Violators of the auto laws will be first given a warning and after that the laws will be enforced to the letter.
Firm purchases property — The firm of Tagget and Gartley has purchased from Lizzie Robinson and Miss Alice Putnam one half of the property on the corner of Market and Union Squares. The other owners are A.G. Munroe, B.S. Green and G.A. Hall.
75 Years Ago – June 5, 1946
New dental office — Dr. George Banton, is preparing to open a dental office in his home which he purchased on David Street.
Elks offer a new Kaiser Car as a door prize — Houlton’s Fourth of July with pageantry, parade, horses, carnival and fireworks, promises to be a gala and a memorable event in the history of the County. As part of the program, a Kaiser Automobile of latest design and finish will be given as a door prize at the dance. The car is the Kaiser type being offered by the Cates Motor Mart.
50 Years Ago – June 8, 1971
Dollars For Scholars — A grand total of $9,725 will be awarded this year under the Houlton Dollars For Scholars program, according to program president David Harbingon. The fund, said Harbison, will enable 29 Houlton and Hodgdon seniors to receive scholarship aid and to further their education after graduation.
Square dance jamboree — Over 450 square dancers from across Maine and New Brunswick packed into the Gentile Memorial Building for the 5th Annual Square Dancers Jamboree, sponsored by the Houlton Promenaders. As many as 51 squares were on the floor at one time.
25 Years Ago – June 5, 1996
Loan for Mars Hill plant — The Northern Maine Development Commission is overall board approved an additional $500,000 loan Thursday for the Freshway processing plant in Mars Hill bringing their total loan amount to $1.5 million.
On to New York — Joshua Carr and Karen Chamberlain will be representing The Salvation Army of Houlton at a musical star search competition in Niagara Falls, N.Y., on June 15 in conjunction with an Eastern Territorial Congress being sponsored by The Salvation Army. Joshua and Karen will be competing against other Salvation Army young people from throughout the Eastern United States, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands. Both Joshua and Karen will be competing in a piano competition.
