MARS HILL, Maine — BigRock Mountain has received a $10,000 grant from combined funds at the Maine Community Foundation, which will be used to open snowshoeing trails and purchase rental snowshoeing equipment.
“We are excited to be able to offer another winter outdoor activity for our community to utilize, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the Maine Community Foundation,” said BigRock Mountain Assistant General Manager Aaron Damon.
The grant came from the Aroostook County Fund, Aroostook Winter Sports Fund, and the Caroline D. Gentile Fund of the MCF.
Snowshoeing provides people a chance to socialize and be physically active while enjoying County winters. It is also a sport that appeals to people of all ages and fitness levels, Damon said.
“This project allows BigRock to bring the community some new, groomed trails as well as purchase snowshoes that will be available for rental,” he said.
The rentals will provide income that will help to sustain the trail’s maintenance for years to come, as well as make the sport accessible to those who don’t have personal equipment.
BigRock plans to purchase approximately 35 pairs of snowshoes and poles with sizes ranging from small children to adults. Individuals also have the option of bringing their own equipment, and if interested can purchase equipment locally.
“We are working with Bike Board and Ski to purchase the rental fleet including snowshoes, poles, tails and repair kits. Mike Chasse is the owner of Bike Board and Ski as well as a board member for BigRock Mountain. It’s a fantastic partnership,” Damon said.
This summer BigRock will begin pre-season grooming, trail design, sign creation, and hosting of the community trail pickup day. The trails are projected to be available for use when the mountain opens for its 2021-2022 season.
