100 Years Ago – June 23, 1921
New signs welcome travelers — The Houlton Chamber of Commerce has just erected on all main roads leading into Houlton large signs bearing the words “You are now entering Houlton”
During the last few years many tourists coming into town have asked, “What town is this?” The signs are for the purpose of enlightening them to the name of the town.
75 Years Ago – June 19, 1946
Special investigator appointed — Sheriff Jasper Lycette announced this week the appointment of C. Gerald Scovill, former member of the Immigration Border Patrol, as special investigator attached through his department to work throughout Aroostook County with headquarters in Houlton.
Starting own business — Edmund DeVeau, who has been employed at Dunn’s as a linoleum mechanic since 1939, has decided to start his own business as a carpenter.
50 Years Ago – June 23, 1971
‘Fairy Tales’ sack fashion show theme — Girls ages 10 to 14 are now signing up and obtaining a potato sack fashion show which will be part of the annual Potato Feast on June 30.
Twirling corps parades at VFW state convention — The Houlton Twirling and Drum Corps represented the Town of Houlton in the Parade Saturday of the Veterans of Foreign Wars State Convention in Caribou.
25 Years Ago – June 19, 1996
University Women citation — Mary Ellen Moores Emery has received the 1996 Achievement Citation from the American Association of University Women. Emery, the director of Health and Social Service for Houlton, credits a sense of humor as part of her success.
‘Pioneering’ Year of Education — During Saturday’s commencement ceremony at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, the school’s first 30 graduates and their parents were heralded as pioneers. School officials thanked them for having the courage to forge a path to the state’s first magnet school.
