I entered the lobby of the movie theatre, immediately dazzled by the aroma of fresh popcorn. Beneath my feet, newly refreshed, plush carpet welcomed me as we stepped up to the counter and purchased our tickets.
The refreshment stand beckoned, and I ordered a medium soda and an unsalted, giant pretzel that twirled before me in the warming portion of the pretzel machine, The attendant informed me that I would have to wait while he prepared my pretzel, as the ones dancing about under the warming light were now unsuitable for consumption.
I waited patiently, sipping my drink and absorbing every moment. All around me, children and their parents filled the lobby with laughter and chatter and life.
My sister and I settled into our movie seats, balancing our snacks as our eyes adjusted to the dim light. The movie had begun and I was instantly mesmerized by the brilliant colors and the crystal-clear sound system. There were approximately 20 patrons scattered throughout the venue, but the energy in the room was abundant. I felt immediate comradery with the other movie-goers, and for the first time in a long time, I felt safe.
The movie itself was superb. It was the Disney movie, “Cruella.” The costumes were bold, detailed and elaborate. The movie soundtrack was magnificent and the acting was of the finest caliber. I highly recommend this film, my friends.
But, even more, I encourage you to step back out into our world, in whatever fashion you choose. A lovely dinner in a restaurant, perhaps. A jaunt to Bar Harbor or a shopping trip to Bangor or Portland that includes an overnight stay in a hotel. A Bingo game. We are a strong society, with a history of challenges and victory.
Perhaps I am too optimistic. Chances are I am too frivolous with my trust and comfort, but I feel as though a weight has been lifted and we are moving toward normalcy. Simple pleasures that were once expected and taken for granted are now recognized, appreciated and valued. Masks that once smothered smiles and interfered with breathing for some, are now required only in select areas.
Despite our varying political views, I believe we are breathing a sigh of relief and stepping back onto the world with great relief and enthusiasm.
