HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Higher Education Center announces the availability of Osher New Beginnings Scholarships for anyone interested in exploring college in the fall semester.
“This scholarship was established especially for those who are first-time college students,” stated Center Director Tracy Rockwell. “It can be a cost-free way for those wanting to find out if college is a good fit for them. Many who try one course find out that pursuing a degree is a real possibility.”
To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Maine and have earned either a high school diploma or equivalent. Preference is given to first-time college students and returning adult students who have not attended college for three or more years and who have accumulated 30 or fewer successful credit hours. An easy to complete form is available for those interested in applying.
An Osher Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees and books for one course, providing an individual the opportunity to start or restart their college education with minimal risk. Participants do not need to be enrolled in a degree program to be eligible.
The scholarship is available for University of Maine System courses offered through the Center. The Houlton Center offers the convenience of staying close to home while studying for a degree and maintaining family and work responsibilities.
This scholarship is made possible by a 2000 gift from The Bernard Osher Foundation. Since its inception, thousands of students have received scholarships and have enrolled in university courses, many taking the next step of enrolling in a degree program. By taking a course through the Houlton Higher Education Center, scholarship recipients also benefit from the personalized support of experienced advisors, tutoring services, as well as a variety of other resources.
