Horseless carriage — A.W. Spaulding has the largest automobile in all of Aroostook County.
New sheriff deputy – – Wilbur York was appointed Deputy Sheriff in place of C.F. Ross who resigned last week.
100 Years Ago – July 28, 1921
In-air stunt pilot — Mr. George Shaw, a well known flier, a Caribou boy, whose sky piloting stunts are remembered with pleasure by practically all of Aroostook County, is having his machine overhauled at Rockland. Everything will be in peak condition from nose to propeller. It is hoped that he will come to Aroostook where there are many anxious for a ride in the sky.
Power company — The Gould Electric Power Company is making a lot of improvements in their electric service this summer.
75 Years Ago – July 24, 1946
Band at Thomas Park — Last Friday evening the New Sweden Band presented an unusually good program at Thomas Park. Special numbers were songs by the Jepson Brothers and Constance Hedman. Mrs. Arne Mentor played several selections on the accordion which was greatly enjoyed by all.
Snider Canning — W. Atwater, roadman for the Limestone district vinery of the Snider Canning Company, has been in the area several times of late in connection with the harvesting of peas.
50 Years Ago – July 28, 1971
Phil’s pheasant — Caribou High School students, under the direction of Phil Rogers, head of the Agriculture Department, are raising over 200 male and female pheasants in a game shelter erected behind the high school. The pheasants will be released in early fall with about 15% expected to survive through the winter. The program is sponsored by the Caribou Chapter of the FFA in cooperation with the Fish and Game Department.
Lookout tower now owned by Stockholm — Town manager Gordon Dixon has received a congratulatory message from Governor Kenneth Curtis upon the occasion of the community’s 90th anniversary. The message also informed him that the Stockholm lookout tower has been transferred from State to Community ownership.
25 Years Ago – July 24, 1996
Old-time celebration — Stockholm Days Open House held recently by the Stockholm Historical Society featured residents dressed in costumes of the 1800s, who marched and rode bicycles as they sang good old 1890s tunes. The singing continued in the museum’s barn where ice cream and lemonade were served.
Chiefs Honored — Stockholm Fireman Joe Thibodeau recently hosted an event in honor of past Fire Chiefs of the Stockholm Volunteer Fire Department. All past Chiefs received certificates for their service and a letter from Olympia Snowe. Receiving them were Frederick Anderson 1947-1969, Lewis Campbell 1981-1988, Mark Tibodeau 1989-1992, Francis Anderson 1963, and Delmar Brissette 1970-1980.
