Nomination papers now available for Houlton council, school board seats

HOULTON, Maine — Those looking to serve the community of Houlton will have ample opportunity to do so this November.

For the second straight year, four seats will be up for grabs on the Houlton Town Council because of recent resignations. Two seats for three-year terms are available, as are a pair of two-year seats.

The three-year terms available for the town council are currently held by councilors Ed Lake and Chris Robinson. Both individuals have expressed a desire to seek re-election and are currently collecting signatures.

The two-year terms for the council are currently held by Bill McCluskey and Mark Horvath. McCluskey is resigning from the council, effective Aug. 23, as he is moving outside of the Houlton town limits and is no longer eligible to serve.

Horvath was appointed to the board July 26 to fill a seat left empty when Nate Bodenstab stepped down for similar reasons. If Horvath wishes to continue serving, he will have to run for election in November.

The RSU 29 school board has three openings for directors. All three of those seats are three-year terms and are currently held by Tammy Goetsch, Scott White and Rosa McNally.

Individuals interested in serving on either board must obtain nomination papers from the town office. A total of 77 signatures from registered voters must be obtained by the 4 p.m. Sept. 7 deadline.

In addition, there are multiple vacancies on the town’s Board of Budget Review with a trio of three-year terms and a pair of 2-year terms available; two seats available on the Houlton Water Company board of directors and one seat open for the Cary Library board of trustees.
