100 Years Ago – Aug. 25, 1921
Bowling alleys on the way — William Golden has purchased two bowling alleys which have arrived and will be installed this week as soon as the workman arrives. They are also to install another bowling alley for the Elks Club.
Siberian rabbit farm — Mr. Fred A. Shean, of Green Street has recently developed into a breeder of high grade and registered Siberian Rabbits, and at the present time he has residing at his residence a large number of these handsome animals.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 21, 1946
Big chain store opening — Formal opening tomorrow of the new JCPenney Department Store, is at 9 Market Square, they will disclose extensive remodeling and improvements benefiting the shopping public, H. Carlyle Stieler declared. The new store is one third larger, containing more than 8000 square feet.
Real estate rep –Mrs. Mabel White has been appointed representative of the EA Stront Real Estate Agency and for the present her office will be at her home on Weeks Street.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 25, 1971
Parking too long will cost — Town councilors have doubled the fine for overtime parking. A parking ticket will now cost $1 and the fine could reach as high as $50 for repeat offenders.
New meeting hall — The Houlton Jaycees have been given the go ahead by the town councilors to begin construction on a new meeting hall. The building, to be built on Garrison Hill, will be modeled after the enlisted men’s barracks at the historic site.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 21, 1996
Bean supper a success — The Lumberman’s Museum’s annual bean-hole bean dinner, held Saturday, August 10, was a success. It would not have been possible without the help of many generous people.
Past and present — As the new school year got underway last week, on hand for Houlton Elementary’s 25th anniversary were Principal Bob Cowperthwaite, past principals Beverly Clark, Jay Brewer, and SAD 29 Superintendent Bill McDonnell.
