75 Years Ago – Aug. 22, 1946
Frank Hussey re-elected — At the director’s meeting immediately following the annual meeting, Frank W. Hussey was re-elected president. This re-election was tribute to the capable and aggressive leadership that had been provided by Mr. Hussey as President over a period of 10 years.
Other officers elected were as follows: M. E. Smith, vice president; H. E. Bryant, treasurer and general manager; George V. Blanchard, secretary and clerk. Members elected to serve on the executive committee were: Frank W. Hussey, M. E. Smith, F. M. Dudley, Harley Welch and Phil Thornton. Immediately following the supper held in the USO Building in Presque Isle at 6 p.m. The local Association paid recognition and tribute to Marilyn Harmon and Milton Daggett for outstanding work in 4-H and Future Farmers work during the previous year by presenting them each with traveling bags.This presentation was made by Cliff McIntyre of Perham.
Tate named membership chairman — Robert Tate had been appointed manager of the Farm Bureau membership drive for members, according to an announcement by Wallace Fenlason, president of the Farm Bureau. “Bob” Tate was no stranger to Farm Bureau and Extension work as he served as assistant county agent for two years. He helped organize a drive for 2,700 members which was the goal established by the executive committee.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 25, 1971
Ashland man retired — Lewis C. Coffin, a native of Ashland, retired May 31 as head of the Law Department of the Library of Congress. He had been associated with the library for more than 40 years. Dr. Coffin was a graduate of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, and received his law degree from George Washington University Law School, Washington, D.C. The university awarded him an honorary doctor’s degree in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the field of library work. Dr. Coffin became president of the International Association of Law Librarians in July 1968 and a member of the Board of Directors of the United States book Exchange in 1970. He is the author of numerous articles, reports and lectures.
New assistant professor at Farmington State College — Dr. Theodore A. Tyler Jr. of Presque Isle had been appointed assistant professor of chemistry at Farmington State College. His was one of 13 appointments of new faculty members to the staff of FSC for the 1971-72 academic year. The announcement was made by President D. Justin McCarthy. Tyler received his BS from Stevens Institute of Technology and his PhD from Northeastern. He previously taught at Northeastern and the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Henrikson won State Hotshot Championship — Aroostook County was well-represented at the 1996 Maine Recreation and Parks Association Hotshot State Championships, as three youth from the area came away with top honors. Caitlin Henrikson of Presque Isle was the winner of the girls 9-10 age division with a score of 109, while Kyle Hipsley of Houlton took first in the boys 13-15 age group with a 133 and Erica Drake of Houlton captured first in the girls 16-18 category with a 94. Brandon Hale of Presque Isle took second in the boys 9-10 category with a 93, while Marigan Bishop, also of Presque Isle, was the runner-up in the girls 11-12 age division. Holly Quint of Houlton tallied 99 points, good for second place in the girls 13-15 classification. Other results involving local competitors were as follows: Leah Drew of Caribou, girls 9-10, 62 points; Nicki Lyons of Houlton, girls 11-12, 100 points; Ryan Cottle of Houlton, boys 11-12, 93 points; and Kelly Cocoby of Houlton, girls 13-15, 87 points. All 10 local shooters had advanced to the state championship by virtue of their top-two finish at the northern regional held at Caribou in the spring.
Sixth in the nation — Members of the Presque Isle 4 X 100 relay team, which consisted of Kyle Jame, Zak Smith, Matt Pelletier and Luke Blackstone, received their medals for placing sixth in the event. The boys competed in the 11-12 year-old boys division at the Hershey Track and Field National Meet held August 10 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The team’s time was 58.20 seconds.
