AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — Students at Presque Isle, Mars Hill and Washburn schools have been dismissed early today due to the unusually high heat index in The County.
SAD 1 announced late Thursday morning that Presque Isle High School, the only school in the district to begin classes so far, would be dismissed at 11:30. SAD 45 in Washburn and SAD 42 in Mars Hill also dismissed students and canceled after-school activities.
Those decisions came just as schools in Fort Kent and Madawaska chose to dismiss students at noon due to the heat. Just one week prior, Caribou, Van Buren and Mars Hill schools made that same call due to the heat index.
The National Weather Service in Caribou is projecting a high of 88 degrees for Thursday, with temperatures leveling off into the high 60s or low 70s for the coming week.
