100 Years Ago – Sept. 1, 1921
Houlton Fair — The Houlton Fair with an assortment of unusually large and varied assortment of stellar attractions is in full swing. They hope to break attendance records this year.
Horse now has a single owner — George Osbourne of Limestone recently sold his half of the famous trotting mare Millie to George Colbath of Presque Isle, who already owned half.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 28, 1946
Tenth potato contest — The J.R. Harvey Company announces the sponsorship of its 10th annual big potato contest which will begin Sunday and close Nov. 1. It is open to all farmers in Aroostook County who produce oversize tubers.
Rogers to erect a new showroom — Work started yesterday by A.L. Rogers on what will be a new sales, service and showroom for Studebaker cars and trucks on the corner of Military and Kendall streets. Mr. Rogers has purchased from Paul Jackins a lot at the intersection measuring 65 by 130 feet.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 1, 1971
Campus has added many new areas — Ricker College is beginning its new year with several physical changes in its appearance, including a multi recreation area that includes a tennis court, basketball court, and volleyball area. In the winter the area will be flooded with water for skating.
Mobile home city seeks to retain rural flavor — One and one-half miles from Market Square in Houlton, Durfo Enterprises Inc. has used lots of heavy equipment to complete 35 landscaped lots for mobile homes, with underground wiring and plumbing, all done in 14 months. The new Mobile Home City, located off Old Woodstock Road on the property of Houlton International Airport, is the undertaking of John Duran and Welden Folsom.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 28, 1996
Worth saving — The Town Hall of Bridgewater is slowly being brought back to life by a group of concerned residents. The Bridgewater Historical Association was formed in an effort to save the 100-year-old structure from the wrecking ball. The building, and the former jail have both been included in the National Register of Historic Places as a result of the association’s effort.
Houlton Regional welcomes Moakler as CEO — Thomas Moakler began duties as chief executive officer at Houlton Regional Hospital earlier this month. He was selected for this position following a nationwide search conducted by the hospital. He holds an undergraduate degree from Villanova University and a graduate degree from George Washington University.
