100 Years Ago – Oct. 6, 1921
New nurse in training – – Miss Faye Mackay, who has for some time been employed as bookkeeper in the dental offices of Bridgham & Barton, left Sunday for Portland where she is set to enter the St. Barnabas Hospital to train as a nurse.
Caution with fires — Governor Baxter has issued a warning to hunters at the opening of the 1921 season to the effect of dryness of the weather and to use all precautions and co-operate with the forestry department and to protect the forest lands of the state. Being extra careful with fire is important.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 2, 1946
Conference — Rev Arthur Heeb, Mrs. Bernard Archibald and Miss Anne Porter attended the Unitarian Conference in Bangor last week.
Air show — A crowd estimated at more than 10,000 milled about the Houlton Armory Field Sunday afternoon to witness the climax of the CAP-sponsored Air Show, and extended a greeting to Miss Jacqueline Cochrane, who flew here to be the guest of honor from Washington.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 6, 1971
New town office — Two handsome shade trees flank the new Town Office constructed this summer in Monticello, and provide a picturesque setting for the building. The new office is located on the main road, and is situated directly behind the Town’s Honor Roll.
Four-row harvester — A new machine, which harvests four rows of potatoes at a time, was put into operation this fall by Mike Lynds and his son Wendall, who have 410 acres of potatoes in the Monticello area. The harvester was built by Mike in just five weeks. It is hauled by a conventional tractor, and is used in conjunction with a bulk handling operation.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 2, 1996
Fun with scum — The potato camp students had a great time examining pond scum. Houlton High School teacher Herb Pottle took the project to new heights by hooking one of the microscopes up to a television monitor so students could see microscopic life up close and personal.
Knights in bright armor — Recently, the Houlton Knights of Columbus held a planning meeting for this year’s upcoming Tootsie Roll Drive. Several Knights modeled their new armor in advance of the event. This year’s drive will be held on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 11-12, in Houlton.
