CARIBOU, Maine — In a tight, back-and-forth matchup versus rival Presque Isle Wednesday, the Caribou girls soccer team snagged a 2-1 victory — its second win in what has been a difficult season.
Approaching tournament season, Caribou is now 2-10-1 and Presque Isle is 3-8-0. Class B soccer is led by Hermon, which is undefeated, 11-0-0, going into the postseason. The playoffs will be an open tournament format, with all teams qualifying for games.
Both of the Vikings’ goals came in the first half. The first, was an unassisted shot from Gabbie Sutherland. With less than 10 minutes left in the half, Sutherland assisted a goal from Araya Caverhill.
In the second half, Presque Isle avoided the shutout with a goal from Sydney Tawfall off an assist from Olivia Kohlbacher.
With just over 30 minutes left in the game, the match quickly became a defensive duel. While neither team was able to net another shot, the respective goalkeepers put up fantastic performances, Caribou Coach Andrew Kirby said.
Caribou’s freshman goalkeeper, Amelia Godin, made a diving save in the game’s final minute to preserve the win for the Vikings.
