75 Years Ago – Oct. 10, 1946
Bessie Fulton elected Legion Auxiliary head — Mrs. Maurice White was hostess to the past presidents’ parley of the American Legion Auxiliary at a picnic supper at her home.
A short business meeting followed when the following were elected officers for the ensuing year: president, Mrs. Bessie Fulton; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Claude Turner; chaplain, Mrs. Guy Hussey. A donation of chocolate bars was sent to Togus.
Berry accepted a new position — Mrs. Patricia Berry, who attended the University of Maine and completed her work at the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, Massachusetts, accepted a position with the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation in Denver, Colorado.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 13, 1971
Received certificate — Presque Isle Lions Club President Daniel Ladner presented a certificate of appreciation to Lewis Larsson at the last club meeting. Larsson was the featured speaker of the meeting and showed slides of his July vacation in Sweden. The international traveler visited homes of his family ancestors, also the church where his grandparents were married, as well as many other areas. Thirty Lions and three guests were present at the meeting.
Transferal — The outgoing president of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club presented the gavel to G. Melvin Hovey during the Oct. 5 meeting of the club. Hovey became the new president of the organization. Fire Chief Cecil McCready was guest speaker for the meeting and spoke on National Fire Protection Week.
New location — The Maine Employment Security Commission Office (unemployment office), which had been located at 485 Main Street for a baker’s dozen of years, opened its doors in a new location at 60 State Street (formerly Graves’ Market). The new office was completely decorated in a modern motif with wall-to-wall carpeting and paneled semi-offices. Services were expected to continue to expand, according to Manager Elliot Barker, insert, interviewing applicants. An expansion of satellite offices in Houlton and Madawaska was expected to add services to The County. Barker said 1,136 claims were services the previous week, which was down from a high of 3,800 claims in mid-summer. He said that claims would be expected to increase that the harvest season was over.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 16, 1996
First donation — Susanne Sandusky, executive director of the United Way, accepted a check from Mike Dunn, marketing manager of Paragon Cable, in the presence of Barry McCrum, general manager. One thousand dollars was raised by the cable company for the United Way’s Annual Fund Drive.
Washburn’s Flewelling received recognition — Washburn District High School Principal, Larry Hallowell, announced Oct. 10 that Courtney Flewelling had been named a commended student in the 1997 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior. About 35,000 Commended Students throughout the nation were honored for their exceptional academic promise.
UMPI men won 2 more, now 11-0 — The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to 11 games as they defeated conference-rival Thomas College, 2-0, on Saturday and the College of St. Joseph’s in Vermont, 2-1, in double overtime on Sunday. On Saturday, the Owls put together another outstanding defensive performance shutting out a very talented Thomas team in Waterville. The shutout was the seventh in 11 games for goalkeeper, Jeremy Von Oesen, and the Presque Isle defense. Von Oesen, a junior from Unity, made seven saves on seven Terrier shots to preserve the win. Steve Babineau, a junior from Windham, put the Owls on top with eight minutes to play in the first half on a perfect pass from Greg Miller, a junior from Waldoboro. Miller broke away down the left side of the field and sent the cross to Babineau who drove the ball by Thomas goalkeeper Dyke Lawrence for his seventh goal of the season. Lawrence made eight saves on 12 Presque Isle shots to keep his team close.
