November should be a reflective time for all of us. Giving thanks is a large part of who we are and what is truly important in each of our lives.
I have had the pleasure of serving on the board of directors for the Central Aroostook Humane Society for 20-plus years, and I have noticed the different ways that individuals “give back.”
Many donate items (towels, laundry soap, catnip, pet toys, food, bleach, etc.) through organizations that conduct drives and individuals that give on their own. Over the years we have seen young boys and girls show the ultimate kindness in having birthday parties and requesting only gifts given to benefit our shelter pets.
Others have given by coming to the shelter and helping the employees take care of the animals. From cleaning cages, to feeding the animals, walking the dogs and spending time providing tender loving care and attention. The animals need socialization and any human interaction is a plus.
What is somewhat amazing is the following that we have on Facebook. We have 13,782 people who follow our posts. Many will like and share our posts, which go out to an incredible amount of people. This is especially important when we have special events going on, or a family pet has gone missing. So many will get the word out, and most times, the pet will find its way back to its family thanks to the kindness of our supporters.
Betsy and Heather will also post wonderful photos of the dogs and cats who are up for adoption. A picture will speak volumes, and many will find their forever homes quickly thanks to the exposure they get on Facebook.
We are grateful to have financial supporters through the municipalities contracting with the animal shelter for the services we provide for the abandoned and seized animals. We have also been so very fortunate to be the recipient of individuals leaving a donation in their last will and testament. To think that their last wishes include helping out the ones who don’t have a voice is touching.
Although our fundraisers have been on hold for a while, our hope is that in 2022 all our fun and popular events will be back, bigger and better.
Being a nonprofit organization, we are blessed and thankful for everything that our supporters provide.
