75 Years Ago – Nov.. 21, 1946
Carleton Kilpatrick was named to the General Senate at U. of M. — P. Carleton Kilpatrick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald M. Kilpatrick of Presque Isle and a member of the Men’s Senate at the University of Maine, was named as a representative to the General Senate.
The General Senate is a student government body composed of representatives from the Women’s Student Government association and the Men’s Senate. This student government panel is the overall governing body for the general supervision and coordination of student activities.
Local boys won UM awards — Four Presque Isle athletes and one from Caribou were among the 128 University of Maine students who received awards for competing in football and cross country during the fall season. Ronald Everett and Douglas Morton, both of Presque Isle, received ‘M’ letters as members of the varsity cross country team. Leon Shalek and Samuel Zimmerman, both of Presque Isle as well, were awarded numerals as members of the junior varsity ‘A’ football squad; and Paul Lynch of Caribou received his numeral for playing on the junior varsity ‘B’ squad.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 24, 1971
Easton High School netted $341.40 on drive — The students of Easton High School completed their magazine drive, an annual fundraising activity carried on by the student body, under the direction of the Student Council. The total sales were $1,017.98, of which $341.40 remained with the school in the form of prizes and cash proceeds. Campaign managers included Mike Corey, student council president, and Carol Mahany, vice president of the council. The first-prize winner in the campaign was Carol Mahany, winning a radio. The second prize of a camera was won by Wendy Clark. Donna Dinsmore won third prize, a basketball. Gail Woollard won an alarm clock as fourth prize and Patty Mills a portable desk and light for the fifth prize. A number of smaller prizes were won by about 24 students for selling two, five or seven subscriptions. The freshman class, with Mrs. Joanne Hunter as their adviser, won for their class $25 for highest per-pupil sales, and $25 for being the first class to reach their quota. Class captains were David Fitzherbert, Rae Lynn Knox, Leonna Ladner and Sally Hogan.
Nets $2,500 for hospital — The Hospital Auxiliary of Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital held a meeting on Nov. 16 at the hospital dining room. It was announced that the profit from the annual Auxiliary Antique Show for the year was approximately $2,500. The auxiliary voted to purchase books and two utility carts for the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit. Four state orthopedic clinics had been held since May. Mrs. Joe Hedrich became Dr. McGinn’s new assistant for clinics. The cart, which contained magazines, paperbacks, writing paper, toilet articles, and other small items desired by patients, continued to be wheeled to each room five days a week by an auxiliary volunteer.
Local student elected president — Mrs. Kathryn Kin Walsh of Presque Isle and a senior at the University of Maine at Presque Isle was elected vice president of the Student Education Association of Maine. Elections took place at the fall conference of SEAM held in Augusta. Other officers elected included Roger Sanders, president, University of Maine at Machias, and Terry Jean, secretary, UMM. Other students attending from UMPI were Miss Doreen Ketch, Caribou; Miss Crystal Ward, Fort Fairfield; and Mrs. Marlene Pepin, Presque Isle. UMPI Professor Josephine Matthews served as faculty advisor. Students attending represented 10 campuses in Maine. The total membership of SEAM was 700.

New Child Development employees — Child Development Services of Aroostook, a nonprofit, intermediate educational unit serving children ages birth to 5 years old with disabilities and/or developmental delays, announced the hiring of two new early intervention specialists. Kenneth Arndt, site director for CDS-Aroostook, announced the hiring of Stacey Frost of Caribou to coordinate the special education needs program in the St. John Valley area, and Kimberly Whalen had been assigned to work in the Caribou/Woodland area of central Aroostook County. Both of these early intervention specialists brought prior experience with special needs children, having taught special education through previous employment.
Received conference honors — Three members of coach Bob Grove-Markwood’s University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s soccer squad were chosen as All-Maine Athletic Conference players for their efforts in the previous season. They were Jenny Richards, Stori Shaw and Keli Daigle. Richards was also named to the first team of the All-State Team.
Named to All-Conference — The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s soccer team members that were named to the All-Maine Athletic Conference team were Steve Babineau, David Hamel, Greg Miller, Jeremy Von Oesen and Randy Gartley. Von Oesen was also named to the second team of the All-Maine collegiate team and the Northeast Region Select Team, while Alan Gordon was also voted Coach of the Year by the Maine Men’s Soccer Coaches Association.
