TOWNSHIP 11 RANGE 4 WELS, Maine — Poor weather conditions and speed were cited as the likely cause of a two-car collision on U.S. Route 163 in the unorganized township of Township 11 Range 4 Wels Friday afternoon.

Michael Deabay, 72, of Presque Isle was driving a 2020 GMC Terrain SUV east on Route 163 when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle on the snow-covered roads and crossed the centerline into the path of an oncoming vehicle, according to Sgt. Joshua Haines of the Maine State Police.

Linda Mastro, 69, of Portage was traveling west in a 2016 Buick Enclave and told police she noticed a vehicle swerving out of control. Mastro attempted to direct her vehicle toward the ditch, but was unable to avoid a collision.

Deabay’s vehicle struck Mastro’s vehicle head on. Both vehicles received disabling damage in the crash, and both drivers were taken to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Deabay was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police. No charges were filed.
