100 Years Ago – Dec. 8, 1921
Making street lights shine — The crew of the Houlton Water Company has been busy during the past week cleaning the shades on the street lights and installing new bulbs in the lights.
High school circus — A decided novelty in the history of High School entertainments was given to the people of Houlton by the local school at the Opera Hall last Friday evening in a big circus staged for the benefit of the Opera Hall. The largest crowd ever attended.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1946
Towering team — The unusually tall team of girls from Danforth High edged out the Hodgon girls by a 29-23 score in a well played game last week.
District ruler pays a visit — District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler John Hall paid his official visit to the Houlton Lodge of Elks Tuesday. Included in the suite by a District Deputy were four past deputies from Houlton, W.S. Lewin, Dr. Ebbett, Albert Merritt and George Roach.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 8, 1971
Familiar Scene — The Kids Incorporated project at Katahdin High School in Sherman Station is underway again, and residents throughout the Sherman-Patten area are urged to contribute. Persons may donate toys to the program and these toys will be fixed to “like new” condition and distributed to needy families at Christmas time.
Keep Maine Scenic Awards — The Town of Houlton and the Houlton Pioneer Times have been selected for the special awards for 1971 by the State’s Keep Maine Scenic Committee.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1996
Three decades of service — Houlton Regional Hospital recently held a ceremony to recognize more than 800 years of collective service from their employees. Among those awarded were Walter Goodride, Tom Maokler, Pauline Hogan, Barbara Bossie and Geradine McGuire.
Students gather 300 pounds of food — Not all Houlton youth are facing life without direction or cause. At least not according to Houlton High School Principal David Wiggin. Last week, as members of the HHS Student Council prepared to donate more than 300lbs of donated food for the local Salvation Army, Wiggins applauded the efforts of the group.
