PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Presque Isle High School varsity boys soccer keeper Xavier McAtee has received numerous accolades for his outstanding performance during the 2021 soccer season.
Among the high school senior’s recognitions were being named All Aroostook, Northern State and All-New England athlete, nominated an All-American athlete and recipient of the Butch Shaw Award for soccer.
“Xavier is the type of player any coach would love to have on their team,” said Presque Isle High School boys varsity soccer Coach Tim McCue. “His work ethic, dedication, and leadership abilities are second to none. Most importantly, he is a fine young man with outstanding character. He is a role model for all present and future Wildcats. I am so proud of Xavier and have been blessed to be his coach.”
As keeper, McAtee acted as the last line of defense on the soccer pitch. Not only that, but he was also integral for managing communication with the team, and expressed vital leadership skills in this role.
“A lot of people on my team have been pushing me throughout the years to be better,” McAtee said. “A lot of leaders ahead of me in grades above me have inspired me to be a better, all around individual, with leadership and talent and to push myself further and work hard every day.”
McAtee has been playing soccer since fourth grade. He followed in the footsteps of his sister, who was also heavily involved in soccer, and was also her team’s keeper, as well as his mother, another keeper in the family.
During the rest of the year, McAtee plays for the Presque Isle Wildcats boys varsity basketball team in the winter, and runs track and plays volleyball in the spring.
Next year, McAtee will be going from a Wildcat to an Owl as he will be attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle, studying business and playing soccer for the university.
“I want to thank my family for supporting me,” McAtee said. “I also want to thank my teammates and my coaches for their support over the years.”
