Leon Howe resigns — Leon Howe who has been connected with the IRS in charge of the income tax department in Aroostook completed his work this week in Aroostook County. He has accepted a new position with the Buffalo Fertilizer Branch of I.A.C. and will take up his new duties in Houlton next Monday.
New industry for Houlton — A new business enterprise is in prospect for Houlton in a wet wash laundry, which began operations on Tuesday under the proprietor leadership of Harry Delaney and Ernest Scribner. The site of the laundry will be on lower Military Street in the building occupied by the Hamilton Garage Company.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 18, 1946
42 years with telephone company — Coleman McLaughlin of Island Falls completed 42 years of service as foreman for the Katahdin Farmers Telephone Company on Nov. 30 and was retired at that time on pension.
Houlton Grange chooses female master — History was made at the regular meeting of the Houlton Grange here Saturday afternoon when Beatrice Adams of Linneus became the first woman to be elected Worthy Master since it was founded more than 70 years ago.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 23, 1971
Recognition ceremony — For the first time in the history of Ricker College, a midyear recognition ceremony was held for 31 students who will complete their degree requirements this week.
Railroads will cut rates — New England rail carriers today announced sweeping rate cuts on fresh potatoes to major Eastern market areas that bring rates down to 1960 price levels. The new rates represent major reductions in the costs of shipping potatoes.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 18, 1996
On the air for books — Wellington student Stephen Nason was among a group of youngsters from Hogdon and Houlton to participate in Book Trivia at WHOU Radio Station in Houlton during Reading Awareness Week. Those calling in the correct answers were awarded a paperback book.
Tootsie Roll proceeds — The local chapter of the Knight of Columbus raised more than $1,400 during their annual Tootsie-Roll Campaign held last month. Proceeds were donated to Houlton’s Community Living Association and Green Valley Association residential program in Island Falls. Houlton Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Al Burleigh presented checks for $738 and $492.
