PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Presque Isle girls basketball team put an end to a three-game losing streak with a pair of comfortable home victories last week.
Presque Isle is now 11-6 and in fifth place in Class B North. The Wildcats wrap up regular season play tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 9) with a road contest at No. 8 Caribou (8-8). Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.
On Feb. 2, coach Jeff Hudson’s team rolled to a 56-48 win over Houlton. Presque Isle took the early lead and expanded it by as many as 16 points before holding off a late run by the Shiretowners.
Faith Sjoberg posted a statistical double-double for PI with 23 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four assists and three steals. Anna Jandreau scored 15 points to go along with six rebounds, while Sadie LaPointe notched six points and five rebounds.
Mia Henderson scored 13 points and Bre Barton contributed 12 for the Shires.
In the latest game played Saturday, PI held a tenuous 14-13 lead over Foxcroft Academy midway through the second quarter before going on a 19-0 run over the next six minutes to win going away, 57-30.
Sjoberg and Jandreau were the offensive leaders with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Jandreau recorded eight rebounds and six assists, while Sjoberg added five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
LaPointe had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists for the winners, with Rossalyn Buck coming off the bench to grab eight rebounds.
Following the game at Caribou, the Wildcats will enjoy a week off before playing a preliminary playoff contest Feb. 15. Their opponent will not be determined until the Heal Point standings become finalized Friday.
