Thankful for the weather

To the Editor:

Have we really had it that bad with the cold weather?  I think not!

I recently came across some letters written home by Lt. John S. Hatheway from Hancock Barracks, January 28, 1843. He wrote:  “We have plenty of snow and cold weather here.  The thermometer has most of the time been from 15 to -27.”

And remember, at that time the barracks didn’t have insulated ceilings, walls, floors or windows.  And gloves, jackets and footwear are another story.

Let’s be thankful for what we do have. It could have been much worse.
