115 Years Ago – March 13, 1907
New print shop owner — Mr. G. B. Morgridge of Island Falls has purchased the job printing business of Geo. H. Don Bain of Island Falls.
Schoolhouse is under construction — Work on the new Bowdoin Street schoolhouse is progressing well. The heating apparatus has been installed, and the plastering is drying out, but the building will not probably be used this year, as it will not be completed until May, and it would hardly pay to more for one month.
75 Years Ago – March 6, 1947
Open temporary dental practice — Dr. J. Philip Boyne, recent graduate of Tufts College Dental School, will open a temporary practice in Houlton on March 6, while awaiting an appointment for an internship in oral surgery at Boston City Hospital. Dr. Boyne graduated from Houlton High School in 1942 and received his premedical education at Colby College where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and was active in public speaking and track.
Houltonians winners in Women’s Bowling League — The Houltonians, an independent team, won the championship of the Recreation Department’s Women’s Bowling League from the Beauticians, but only after having been forced to play the limit of the three matches in the finals. The Houltonians hopped off to an early lead, taking the first match by four points but the Beauticians countered on the second night to force the play into the third and final night. The team bowling of the victors held up and they came through to win the trophy for the 1946-47 season.
50 Years Ago, March 8, 1972
Capt. Fauk is assigned to Viet Nam — Captain Mark W. Fauk, a 1965 Houlton High School graduate and a member of the First Special Forces Group, Airborne (Green Berets), will soon assume a new assignment in Viet Nam. After mechanized warfare and parachute infantry training, Capt. Fauk attended the Defense Language Institute in Moneterey, California, where he studied Chinese. He has been training Cambodian and Korean troops, and upon completion of his present overseas assignment will return to his base in Okinawa, Japan. Upon return to the United States in 1973, he completed the requirements for his master’s degree in Mandarin Chinese.
Sherman house badly damaged by fire — The Sherman Fire Department responded to a call early Monday morning at a house on North Street owned by Mrs. Fannie Crockett. The fire of unknown origin badly gutted a bedroom on the second floor and did extensive water and smoke damage throughout the house.

Degenhardt chosen for Jefferson Service Award — From an office overlooking Houlton’s Market Square, Dawn Degenhardt gestured toward the glass and brass trophy she recently received. “The award is nice,” she said. “It’s an honor and it’s always nice to be appreciated.” The County’s only recipient of the 1997 Jefferson Award, Degenhardt is also only the second Aroostook County resident to be recognized for outstanding public service benefiting local communities.
Local players, coach in All-star weekend — Southern Aroostook’s Janna Walker and Hodgdon’s Adam Carter will be among the top players in the state’s A/B and C/D boys and girls divisions of the McDonald’s Senior All-Star basketball games.
