115 Years Ago – March 20, 1907
Vote to purchase park for fair — At a meeting of the Houlton Park and Trotting Assn. and the Gentlemen’s Driving Club, held at the Exchange last Thursday, it was voted to buy the Good Farm on the Bangor Road for a park provided funds could be raised to meet the expense of buying the farm and building suitable buildings.
It was voted to incorporate under the name of the Houlton Fair and Park Association, and a committee for that purpose was appointed. If the scheme meets with the approval of the businessmen and those interested, it will be a go. If not we will not have a dry park this season.
Record fires — Tuesday was a record breaker for the fire department. At 3 o’clock a.m., there was an alarm from Box 61 for a fire in the Dr. Hughes house on Charles Street. At 4 o’ clock there was a chimney alarm from Box 52 at Henry Lamb’s house, and there was a still alarm at Mrs. McKeen’s house on Court Street at 6:50 p.m. At 2 p.m. Wednesday morning they were called to the Hughes house again, and at 5 o’clock a call from the same house, where fire and water damage was $500.
75 Years Ago – March 13, 1947
Receives promotion — Clifton Campbell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Campbell, Highland Avenue, is serving with the Army of Occupation in Nuremberg, Germany, and has recently been promoted to sergeant.
Littleton has done it again — “Littleton has done it again” will be one of the remarks heard after the presentation of the Music Club plays, March 13 and 14. “Merry Molly Malone,” in which Mrs. Cedric Shaw plays the title role, and “Miss Personality Plus,” starring Mrs. Leo Britton, are both comedies and packed with fun. The other local thespians add their art and charm in an equitable manner.
50 Years Ago – March 15, 1972
Crowd sees new school — More than 600 attended the two-day open house last Wednesday and Thursday at Hodgdon’s new elementary school. Tours were conducted by Girl Scouts of Troop 354 under the direction of Mrs. Wynne Tidd and Mrs. Kathy Clifford. A media fair under the sponsorship of the United States Educational Marketing Corporation was on exhibit. The fair displayed an array of sound filmstrips, records and other items used in multimedia programs. Refreshments were served by the Home Economics Department teacher, Mrs. Sue Evanofski. The new school is now operating with 421 students in grades K through 8 with students from Amity, Cary, Haynesville, Hodgdon, Ludlow and New Limerick.
Hamlin chosen all-Maine for fourth straight year — Peter Hamlin, 6-foot guard for the Ricker College Bulldogs, was named All-Maine guard for small colleges for the fourth consecutive year. At the same time, it was announced that Hamlin had received honorable mention in District 32 of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
25 Years Ago – March 26, 1997
Barresi joins HRH staff – – Joy Barresi, RN, BSN, has accepted the position of community education nurse. She joined Houlton Regional Hospital on March 3. Barresi, who grew up in Castle HIll, holds a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Maine at Orono. She has several years’ experience in community education and most recently has been employed by Aroostook County Action Program in Presque Isle as a community education specialist.
Local SAVE students top state finals again — The “Ides of March” were anything but foreboding for more than a dozen area VICA members. After months of practicing and developing experience in their trade, it was finally time to see who was the best in the state and who would represent Maine in national competition in Kansas City, Missouri, later this summer.
