100 Years Ago – Aug.  18, 1921

New Job H.E. Lewin, who for a time was employed by the Daily News has accepted a new position of reporter for the Pioneer Publishing Company.

Renovations — The McCluskey Hardware Company is making repairs on their storefront on Bangor Street. When completed it will give them ample window space for their display work.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1946

First Postwar Field Day at Monticello Attracts Crowd — The first postwar field day of Monticello Fish and Game Club held at Russell Rock Thursday afternoon drew a crowd of more than 2500 spectators to view the varied programs presented for the day and participate in many events, including the revival of target and trapshooting events, and horse pulling.

Store Changes Hands — Duane Gils, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Gils, has purchased Dan Curtis’ store and place of business.

50 Years Ago – Aug. 18, 1971

Retiring — Dorthy McBrine has retired as postmaster of Haynesville after 25 years of service. With the installation of the new postmaster Winnifred Carr, the post office will be moving to a new location in the Country Kitchen Shopping Center.

School Reopening Hodgon schools will reopen next week but elementary students will have to wait until after Christmas break to see the inside of their new building. Construction is proceeding on schedule according to SAD 70 Superintendent Llyod Chase. The new school will house all K-8 students.

25 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1996

Generosity Appreciated Hodgdon residents Arthur and Mim Sloat were recently presented with a picnic table by the families of those who benefited from the use of their pool. The Sloats have donated their pool for public use for the past two years.

Houlton Hits the Air Quiet on the set! Houlton will step into the national television spotlight early next month. QVC, a national home shopping network, reaching an estimated 56 million viewers, has selected Houlton as the lead community in a series of live broadcasts from Maine beginning September 9 at 7 am. The network has been working with the Maine Office of Tourism for several months coordinating “Maine Week.”
