115 Years Ago – April 10, 1907
Sold business — Dr. Mitchell, formerly of Island Falls, has sold his practice and real estate to Dr. W.L. Hunt of Bangor, and will move to Houlton and continue the practice of medicine. We welcome him to our town, and his many friends predict for him a successful professional career.
Fire call — An alarm of fire from box 2D Friday noon called the fireman to a burning flue in Geo. Nile’s residence. There was no damage.
75 Years Ago – April, 3, 1947
Day Jewelry Co. buys local bank — The Haley block on Main Street changed hands this week in one of the largest real estate transactions to take place here in several months when it was purchased by the Day Jewelry Company of Bangor and Portland for an undisclosed figure. The transaction was negotiated through the J.R. Harvey agency, real estate department.
Student nurses — The misses Patricia O’Donnell of Houlton and Charlene Hastay and Florence Bustin of Dyer Brook, student nurses at the Madigan Memorial Hospital, have returned from three months affiliation at the Children’s Hospital in Portland. Student nurses who are leaving to begin their affiliation at the hospital are the Misses Louise Haggerty of Houlton, Martha Horsman of Littleton and Delores Scott of Presque Isle.
50 Years Ago – April 5, 1972
Receives award — The Frank B. Holden Post was awarded the Golden Post of Distinction this week in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the strength of the American Legion, services and activities dedicated to the welfare of the community, state and nation.
Sgt. Tower takes part in giant training exercise — Chief Master Sgt. Russell M. Tower, son of Mrs. Lavina A. Tower, Rt. 1, Houlton, participated in a giant joint services training exercise being conducted at Ft. Hood, Texas, from March 19 through April 1. Sgt. Tower is a U.S. Air Force protective equipment superintendent with the 516th Tactical Airlift Wing from Dyess AFB, Texas.
25 Years Ago – April 16, 1997
Oakfield firm cited for excellence — An Oakfield firm has become just the second Aroostook County business to be recognized for excellence under a state program created in 1991. Katahdin Forest Products was selected, along with three other Maine companies, to receive the Governor’s Award for Business Excellence late last month. In presenting the award to companh president David Gordon, Governor Angus King cited the company’s “environmentally friendly approach to production” as a key reason for their selection.
Houlton vocalists get top honors in festival — On April 5, SAD 29’s music department and the Music Boosters played host to one of the state’s most prestigious music festivals, the Maine State Vocal Jazz Festival. Houlton High School’s auditorium saw 30 student vocal groups from around the state vying for honors of the best vocal music ensemble in Maine. The hometown crowd was not disappointed as their high school vocalists took the top spot in their grouping.
