NEW LIMERICK, Maine — With most of the snow finally melted, the Houlton Community Golf Course is just one short week away from opening for the season.
Typically the first golf course to open in Aroostook County, the Houlton Community Golf Course is on track to continue that tradition this spring. Course officials have targeted Wednesday, April 27, as its opening date. Last year, the course opened on April 19.
“The snow is finally melting, the days are getting longer and warmer,” said Jamie York, president of the Houlton Community Golf Course. “With that, it means we will all be golfing very soon. The course handled the winter very well, which will allow our grounds crew to start working any day now.”
The course also has a new superintendent taking over the maintenance. Kevin Tuttle has been named as the new superintendent. He takes over for Jason Renaud, who spent just one season in that role.
“Like last year, our greens will remain top priority,” York said. “We have made great strides in improving our equipment allowing us to be more efficient and keep up with all the work around the course.”
Located along the scenic shores of Nickerson Lake, the Houlton Community Golf Course was designed and developed in the early 1900s. The challenging nine-hole, par-36 course features two par-three holes and two par-five holes to test more experienced golfers, but is also welcoming to newcomers.
The course can also be played as an 18-hole course by using several different tee spots.
Dave Grant, Houlton High School’s varsity golf coach, will once again offer the Golf for Life program for beginners. This instructive golf program is for adults or for those who have been away from the game for some time and need a refresher.
“This is a great way to be introduced to the game of golf, grab a friend or two and make it a group thing,” York said.
Those who are interested in the program should call Grant at 207-538-8333 to reserve a spot.
The Lakeside Restaurant will also be back for another season with chef Bill Roderick and Nancy Levin. The couple plan to be open in time for Mother’s Day weekend, starting on Friday, May 6.
Those who were not a member of HCGC during the 2020-21 season are eligible for a membership at 50 percent off. Those who received this discount last year may renew for 25 percent off. Budget-friendly payment options are also available.
