115 Years Ago – April 18, 1907
Sold business — Wm. Barker, who has conducted the Caribou Steam Laundry in this place for a number of years, has sold the business to M.L. Hutchinson of Machais, who will probably take possession the latter part of the month.
Mr. Hutchinson will enlarge the plant, putting in a large mangle, larger boiler, etc., and intends to do family washings.
Purchased farm — Mrs. John Darke of Boston purchased a farm in Caribou in 1902 for $1800 and last year sold the same for $8000. She has now purchased the Geo. Farnsworth farm, and will, with her mother, make that her future home. Mrs. Darke is considered one of the best business women of Boston, and has shown her ability in that direction in Aroostook real estate deals.
100 Years Ago – April 20, 1922
Shoe repair shop to open — Mr. and Mrs. John Norell, who has been living in Dover-Foxcroft the past winter, arrived in town Monday. Mr. Norell is going into the harness business with his father, Andrew Norell on Sweden street. It is understood that Mr. Norell will open a shoe repair shop in connection with his harness shop.
New hardware business — Belanger & Martin will open their new hardware store on Water Street Saturday.
75 Years Ago – April 17, 1947
Lloyd’s Market to reopen — Lloyd’s Super-Self Service Market is reopening their new store on Sweden Street this Friday after losing their former location in the large fire occurring here this past winter. Now located in the quarters formerly occupied by the Lucky Strike Bowling Alleys, Lloyd’s have completely remodeled and painted the interior of their new quarters to provide a modern market much larger than their previous quarters. A large meat department and a complete line of frozen foods, fresh fruits and vegetables and groceries with attractive new fixtures makes the new market a desired improvement to Caribou’s shopping center.
25 Years Ago – April 16, 1997
50 years of service — Richard Ward of Limestone was recently recognized for his service for the American Legion. He was honored at a membership dinner on Veterans Day and received his 50-continuous years of service award. To present the certificate was Commander Allen Whitmore of the American Legion, post 127.
Tutoring — The directors of the Maine Community Foundation have approved a grant of $850 to Literacy Volunteers of America-Caribou Area to promote literacy in the Caribou area. The grant was made from the Aroostook County Fund. The LVA is a non-profit organization which offers free, confidential one-on-one tutoring to individuals wishing to improve their reading skills. One of the tutors is Dolores Tarbox.
