HOULTON, Maine — Volunteers with the group Age-Friendly Houlton are looking to clean up Houlton — one area at a time.
Residents age 60 and older who need assistance with giving their yards a good spring cleaning will be able to call upon volunteers with Age-Friendly Houlton, a new organization assisting older residents in the community.
Volunteers will be out in force from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, as part of a “Spring Spruce-Up” cleaning event. Age-Friendly Houlton operates under the umbrella of the American Association of Retired Persons.
“We are setting one up in Houlton to help focus attention on, and assistance for, the needs of elder homeowners in our town who find it hard to get these things done or to afford such services,” said Corinne Sternlieb, a volunteer for the Age-Friendly Houlton group. “We encourage people who might be interested to volunteer for Age Friendly Houlton too. We hope it will also help people recognize the realities facing our friends and neighbors who are ‘aging in place’ but finding certain problems hard to solve, needing help.”
People aged 60 and older are eligible to receive assistance with their spring cleaning needs, including raking/picking up leaves and branches, removing trash the snow hid, clearing away plastic skirting from residences, pounding down nails or resetting screws in steps and other such general maintenance.
Volunteers will bring their own yard bags and take them to the local waste facility at no cost to the homeowner.
