CARIBOU, Maine – Cary Medical Center and Pines Health Services are excited to announce the arrival of participants in the Maine Track MD Program, Bailey Urbach and MacKenzie MacRae, to the Pines and Cary team for their nine-month Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships.
In partnership with Maine Medical Center in Portland, Tufts University School of Medicine offers a Maine Track for applicants who are interested in a unique, innovative curriculum that includes clinical training experiences in Maine. The Maine Track exposes medical students to the unique aspects of rural practice as well as training in a medical center.
Urbach, Maine Track Program Class of 2024, grew up in Hudson, New Hampshire. She attended Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, where she received a bachelor of science degree in neuroscience. While at Ohio State, she performed research in sports injury and performance at high school and college levels, as well as volunteered with several organizations that focus on promoting literacy in Columbus-area elementary schools. Urbach was a four-year varsity letter winner on Ohio State’s rifle team, which included being named a team captain in her senior year.
After graduation, she worked as a general chemistry teaching assistant for the university. Her work with students of all ages furthered her recognition of the role of the physician not only as a learner but as an educator as well.
“I chose the Maine Track because one of the things that I value most is community, and the Maine Track provides unique opportunities to become integrated and involved in Maine communities during my medical education,” said Urbach.
MacRae, Maine Track Program Class of 2024, was raised in Melrose, Massachusetts. She graduated from Bates College with a bachelor of science in neuroscience and minoring in philosophy. As an undergraduate, MacRae was the captain of the women’s ice hockey team and the sailing team.
After graduating, she moved to Boston and worked as a medical assistant at an Internal Medicine practice. While working, she volunteered with homeless women and children in Boston which cemented her passion for working within underserved populations. After graduating from Tufts with a masters in biomedical science, she moved to a village in rural Uganda for one year and worked as the research coordinator and strategic coordinator for a NGO focused on health education and community medicine. Each of these experiences has prepared her to see obstacles as opportunities to improve, work with others, and, when the time comes, to lead with conviction and accountability.
“I chose the Maine Track for the opportunity to be a part of a small cohort of medical students that are able to study, learn and grow into physicians in the state of Maine,” said MacRae. “My past experience in community medicine and health education in rural Uganda reinforced my interest in the Maine Track program which is committed to bring care to those most in need in our country.”
