Presque Isle senior wins Elks scholarship

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Faith Sjoberg of Presque Isle has won a Legacy Scholarship from The Elks National Foundation.

The foundation recently announced its Legacy Scholarship Winners in Maine. Aroostook County winners were Sjoberg, sponsored by Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954, and Samantha Johnson of Houlton, sponsored by Houlton Lodge 835.

The Legacy Scholarships offered by the Elks National Foundation go to high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of living Elks members, who are in good standing with their lodge and who have been members for at least three years.

Student winners will receive $1,000 per year for four years to help pay for college. Winners of the scholarship (excluding first year) are also required to provide one year of service to the sponsoring Elks Lodge.

Among the things they can do to meet the service requirement are the following:  rebound at a Hoop Shoot contest; judge scholarship applications for the next class of Elks scholars; serve with one of  their lodge’s Community Investment Program grant projects; help create an online presence for their Lodge through Facebook, Instagram or Twitter; design an online newsletter/email campaign for the lodge; scan photos or other files for the lodge’s website; or write a press release highlighting the lodge’s good works for a local newspaper.

Candidates may also reach out to their communities by volunteering at a lodge’s regularly scheduled fundraising meals and events; organizing a virtual food or supply drive to support community members in need; and reaching out to vulnerable members of the lodge by calling or writing cards.
