HOULTON, Maine — It may be early in the growing season for many fresh vegetables, but that has not stopped Houlton’s Community Market from returning for another new season.
An annual rite of passage each spring, the Community Market once again opened over the Memorial Day weekend and drew a steady stream of shoppers to Market Square.
“The first day is always a challenge,” said Jane Torres, executive director for the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce. “We have 28 vendors this year and 12 are new. Lots of plants, lettuce, new asparagus, micro-greens, cookies, doughnuts, a woman making beautiful wreaths, handmade cards — the list was impressive. The market really makes the downtown come alive.”
Not even a forecast of midday showers could dampen the spirits of those attending the event.
“The morning weather proved to be ideal, before afternoon showers soaked the area,” Torres said. “We knew there was a high chance of wind and rain but, with us, the first day is sacred so it was a go. Not knowing who would arrive, we were pleasantly surprised by the turnout. The vendors and buyers were very happy to see each other.”
The Community Market is held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday from Memorial Day Weekend to at least Columbus Day.
